Q: Are your herbs organic?

A: Our goal is to only purchase herbs that are certified organic, and do so whenever they are commercially available. Some herbs are not yet being farmed organically, so we acquire ethically wild harvested herbs. As a last resort we use conventionally grown herbs. Whether the herb is organic or otherwise is listed in the description in Single Herb Tinctures and Capsules. We even go the extra step to use only organic alcohol in all our liquid herbal products, unlike most other herbal companies.

Q: How are your liquid herbal extracts made?

A: Organic dried herb is combined with a mixture of organic alcohol and water (menstrum) and allowed to soak for 8-10 weeks to fully extract all of the active constituents. (Most over-the counter herbal preparations only soak for several days). The final product is made by pressing out the liquid from the soaked mixture.

Q: Why bother with organic alcohol since the final product after distillation is the same as conventional alcohol?

A: It is possible that some impurities in the conventionally grown corn used to make alcohol may make it into the final product. Furthermore we believe it is important to support organic agriculture. Conventional agri-business has a devastating effect on our economy and environment, especially with the use of pesticides, herbicides, chemical fertilizers and genetically modified organisms. This devastating impact is greatly lessened by organic, sustainable agricultural practices.

Q: How do I know how much of the liquid extracts to take?

A: Everyone is different when it comes to severity of illness, strength of immune system, and sensitivity to specific herbs. It is our opinion that most people are guided to under-dose when it comes to herbal medicine. Our formulas are very strong and work very well in most cases, but you do need to take them in sufficient quantities. For our liquid products, we recommend a range of 1-3 teaspoons three times per day. In acute illness, one may need to take 1-3 teaspoons every few hours until symptoms are under control. If you know that you are sensitive to medications, always start at a lower dose and work your way up to higher doses. Usually the worst side effect of taking too much liquid extracts would be an upset stomach. For more information see DOSING Guidelines for Herbal Medicine.

Q: Will your products interfere with my prescription medication?

A: Typically, the answer is no. However, there are far too many prescription drugs of varying levels of toxicity and side effects for us to answer this question specifically. Please consult a professional health care provider who is specifically trained in botanical medicine to find out if the drugs you are taking may react negatively with any herbal preparations.

Q: Are there side effects to your products?

A: Potentially there could be unintended effects by taking any medicine: OTC, herbal, homeopathic, or pharmaceutical / prescription. Side effects, when associated with standard pharmaceutical products, such as liver damage, anal leakage, narcolepsy, heart damage etc., would most likely never occur with any reasonable dose of any herbal preparations. It is, however, prudent to be aware of how your body reacts. Use any herbal preparation in the manner in which it is recommended and ALWAYS seek professional advice in regards to any unexpected symptoms or side effects.

Q: How long does it take to feel the effects and get results when using herbs?

A: As soon as the herbs enter your blood stream they begin working. It is a misconception that herbs take weeks to work. How soon you feel the effect depends on your metabolism, sensitivity, and how severe and /or longstanding your condition has been. Some conditions may take days or weeks to resolve and some may resolve almost immediately.

Q: I've been using your products with great results, but the liquid Professional Compounds don't taste very good. What options do I have?

A: Firstly, always dilute the liquid herbals in a small amount of juice or water. One method is to put the measured amount of herb into a shotglass, fill the rest of the way with a strong tasting juice and swallow all at once. Follow with more juice or water. Some people find that the taste is less strong if herbal is kept cold in the refrigerator but this is not necessary. A second way is to put the daily dose of herbal medicine in a large glass filled with the juice of one lemon, herbal tea, and honey to taste. Sip on this drink throughout the day. You may also consider taking the formula in capsule or glycerite (non-alcohol) based liquid herbal whenever available.

Q: I'm confused about when to take capsules and when to take liquid extracts?

A: Generally speaking, the liquid extracts are thought to be more potent than capsules because the alcohol extraction process makes certain compounds more available than simply taking whole powdered herb (as in capsules). Exceptions to this rule are certain capsule formulas that contain standardized ingredients or extracts not appropriate for the alcohol extraction process. Another factor to consider is compliance. Some people will not take the liquid herbs because of the taste and therefore should be directed to take capsules or when available, glycerite forms.

Q: I used to order from DesertHerbals.net and now when I go to that site I'm being forwarded to this one (ExodusHerbs.com). Are the products the same?

A: The company name changed from Desert Herbals to Exodus Herbs.
